The 'December Market' in Vienna dating back to 1294 is regarded by some as the forerunner to the Christmas Market Vienna is a popular city break destination all year around. Many people choose to visit the city around late November and December time and go and visit the museums and view the impressive architecture, not to mention savour the culture that Vienna has to offer. They then attend the various Christmas Markets and do their shopping., which include venues like Schloss Schönbrunn which is a famous visitor attraction in it's own right.
Don't restrict yourself to Vienna though Graz has a fantastic market as does Innsbruck which hosts two main markets.
The alpine towns and villages invariably host markets, which although are not that large are oozing character and atmosphere.
