Tivoli Christmas Market
Tivoli's unique downtown location makes it an ideal venue for shopping, dining, and having fun, close as it is to the Copenhagen hotels and the shopping and cultural hot spots of the old city. Enter Tivoli and discover a world of beautiful scenery, spectacular lighting, gorgeous restaurants and fun shopping.
Stroll around Tivoli and sample the Danish Christmas treats 'gløgg & æbleskiver' a hot and spicy drink made on red wine and traditionally accompanied by round, pan-fried cakes served with sugar and jam. Or visit one of the 20-odd restaurants and have a traditional Danish Christmas lunch with pickled herring, liver paté, meat balls and other Danish delights. Most of the restaurants also offer a la carte international cuisine if you are not up for culinary experiments.

My Mum and I went to the Copenhagen Christmas Market on the 23rd November 2007 for four days. We stayed at the Imperial Hotel which was very nice and very close to the market (worth looking at if you're interested in visiting but brekfast was expensive).
The market was amazing. You walk up to the main entrance and the whole place is glowing. There are lots of little stalls/shacks which have been build espeically for the Christmas Market, all them have pine branches attached to each roofs - pine branches are also laid out alongside the paths and everywhere you go it smells beautiful.
All the people are lovely, and even though not all of them speak English, it is quite easy to pick up what you should say, ie, thank you, hello, etc.
There was such a variety of items being sold, we even took my Dad a Danish Christmas Sausage home.
Even though it was early in the season, the atmosphere was lovely. There was a Winter Wonderland which you can walk through with mechanical Elves and Rabbits everywhere! I had to eventually drag my Mum out...
Copenhagen was dark quite early on, about 5pm ish, and thats when the night begins, the lights all around Tivoli are turned on - I have never seen anything like it. Everything is lit up. The Weeping Willows around the small lake have almost every branch rapped around with fairy lights, and walking underneath them was magical. There is a water and light display every hour from 5pm onwards with music. If the display is still going on in 2008 Christmas Market, see if you can, have a drink at the Faergekron Restaurant which sits on the lake and make sure you're sitting outside in the bar area when the display starts - what a sight, front row seats!
Last year, there was coal fire pits dotted around the grounds, it is lovely to see people crowding around them, and you'll be surprised how enticing they are.
There is also lots to do in Copenhagen when you are not at the Christmas Market. There is a brilliant bus service which takes you all around the sights with a constant headphone commentary (very touristy but really good). The boat rides are also great fun, but take some warm clothing, it gets pretty chilly on them. There is a Ripleys Believe or Not Museum in the main square, it is a very fun place to visit. Also, there is a very long main street with lots of shops along it, there is a lot of Amber shops with beautiful Amber models in the windows, even the Sydney Opera House.
All in all, it is a very beautiful place and really worth a trip. The items sold are lovely and very individual (we have some lovely Father Christmas figures). You won't regret it.
