50 Christmas Markets in Berlin
With well over 50 Christmas Markets and advent bazaars every year, Berlin features prominently on Germany's calendar of Yuletide events. A popular market is situated next to Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church amidst the bustle of shoppers on the high street between the Kurfüstendamm and Tauenzien. The Berlin Christmas Market shown on the map on the left is WeihnachtsZauber situated on the Gendarmenmarkt. This is probably one of the most popular markets in Berlin and is well sited in terms of nearby hotel accommodation.
Tempted by the seasonal aroma of mulled wine and baked cinnamon stars, visitors are drawn to more than 100 handicraft stalls, refreshment stands and amusements at the market. Here, they are sure to find the right Christmas gifts amongst the yuletide decorations, ornaments, toys and pretty accessories on sale.
Performing on stage at the Weltbrunnen fountain every weekend during advent will be trumpet ensembles, children's choirs, jazz and Dixie players. In this western part of the city centre, the air around the memorial church will be filled with the sounds and smells of Berlin's Christmas market.

We visited Berlin at Christmas last year (2008) and had a great time. Berlin has loads of Christmas markets but we found that not many of them are right in the city itself. There were around 4-5 that we found though - so plenty to look round!
The markets held a range of items with some markets also having a more upmarket section selling handbags, shawls and clothing - they were expensive though! There was also a wide range of food and drink options including the usual Bratwurst and Gluhvein.
There is also plenty to see outside of the markets themselves - Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenberg Gate, an Ice Rink and a few galleries to name a few.
There is a market in the centre of Berlin that charged entry at 1 euro. This one held a great range of goods, but also was located next to a church which held Carol Services that we also attended.
In the evenings there were a few bars (best one was next to the paid entry market) that had outdoor seating with blankets and heaters, which was fab! Being able to sit outside near the lit up markets with hot mugs of Gluhevein was brilliant.
Overall, a fab destination in itself, and the christmas markets and festive feel made it a great place to go to get into the Christmas Spirit!

This market appeared out of the market square like a re-enactment of "Father Christmas's Workshop" full of toys and local goods, with an excellent assortment of great foods as well as entertainment. There was a good range of different stalls - probably the best Chrsitmas market I have been to. You have to pay an entrance fee of about a euro, but well worth it, and it made you seem like you were entering a special magic area, rather than just passing through a market place. The surroubnding area was very pretty, lots of beautiful buildings all lit up and enhanced by the live music from the local band
