Christmas Market in Bernkastel-Kues
This medieval ‘town of vines and wines’ is the most favoured excursion and holiday destination on the Moselle all year round. Particularly in winter when the town prepares for the forthcoming Christmas celebrations. The historical half-timbered houses, romantic corners and narrow streets form the most picturesque background for the renowned Christmas market.
Each year the unique atmosphere of this lovingly created market with its cornucopia of festive events enchants visitors from all over the world.
On the first Saturday in December approximately 100 swimmers bearing torches strike out from the harbour in Kues through the water - each one carrying a burning torch in his hand. They are followed by oarsmen in a decorated skiff; accompanied by the bishop of St. Nicholas - standing under an illuminated wreath in the boat. Arriving in Bernkastel, St. Nicholas - "Friend of all children" - hands out chocolate gifts to the little ones.

What a beautiful town, this was a perfect pre christmas break. The market was not as good as we thought but we found everything we needed to get. We would definately visit again. absolutely stunning scenery.
