Cologne Christmas Markets

In December, Cologne offers its visitors a grand total of seven romantic Christmas Markets in the city centre. Each has its own special atmosphere and its own programme. Angels and Saint Nicolases, elves and Father Christmases as well as twinkling stars and the aroma of roasted almonds and ‘Glühwein’ invite you to browse in the festively decorated centre of Cologne.

Experience the Christmas season’s moment of glory at the Christmas Market at Cologne Cathedral. Let yourself be fascinated by diverse arts and crafts, unusual gift ideas and the wide palette of food and drinks on offer.

In the middle of the historic and idyllic Cologne Old Town stands the rustic Christmas market “Home of the gnomes”. According to the famous Cologne legend, this was also the home of the elves who were said to be particularly good craftspeople. Therefore, at this Christmas market you can find a particularly large number of handcraft stalls, where goods are still produced in the traditional way.

Cologne’s oldest Christmas market is the market on the Neumarkt, in the shopping area against the backdrop of the church St. Aposteln. Once again in 2011, as in recent years, the Angels Market  glows in pre-Christmas splendour with its lovingly designed houses and unique starry sky.

Just a ten minute walk from Neumarkt, the Fairytale Christmas market is situated at Rudolfplatz. The motto of the sixty huts at the Hahnentorburg is the brother’s Grimm tales.

 Therefore, this Christmas market delights particularly younger visitors. From Europe’s largest floating Christmas Market with over forty stalls, you get a truly dream-like view of the Cologne Old town and the Cathedral. The market will take place on the ship “MS Wappen von Köln”.

The Christmas market at Stadtgarten has a far more relaxed village like atmosphere.

The new maritime Christmas Market presents itself in picturesque scenery directly on the Rhine with about 80 stalls in white pagoda tents with roof peaks appearing like ship sails. High-quality products and art craft, dishes and drinks from all over the world as well as a coloured programme with pirates, Shanty and Christmas performances invite for a stay with a tasty mulled wine.

I have visited a few christmas markets across Europe but so far Cologne's are by far the best! There are 6/7 large markets all within walking distance of each other with hunderds of wooden huts all lit up selling all sorts of fabulous gifts and yummy food and drink! There is also an outdoor ice rink at one one of the markets. The market in front of the Cathedral is my favourite with lots of fairy lights joining the huts and the large christmas tree in the middle. There is a little train that can take you between some of the markets which is useful if your feet hurt from all the wandering around! One of the markets is on a boat on the river which is really nice! While we were in Cologne we paid a visit to the Lindt factory which was really worthwhile, the smell of all that chocolate is fab! Also Cologne's Zoo is really good. We spent 4 days in Cologne altogether which was just enough time to take everything in. I will definately go back to Cologne's christmas markets and will definately recommend them to everyone!!!

I went to three Christmas markets when I went to Cologne: one outside the Cathedral, one near the River Rhine and one in the centre of the shops. The first one was excellent and had a great atmosphere, the goods were exquisite and there was range of them. The one near the Rhine was just as brilliant and had a beautiful ice rink and merry-go-round in the centre. The one in the centre of the shops was great, it sold mostly home goods and lavish food. All the stalls were in little huts and looked very homely. Each market had great sevice and a welcoming atmosphere. It was the best weekend away ever and I would definetly go again!

We visited Cologne Christmas Market in 2006 and had a fantastic time. There are a few large markets all close to the centre of the city which made them easy to get to on foot. The markets held a range of goods from flavoured mustards to nutcrackers. There was also a wide range of food stalls too selling both meat and vegetarian options, not to mention the tasty Gluhvein! The Lindt Chocolate factory is also in the centre and we spent a fab morning wondering around there! A small 'train' takes you between the main sites and markets in Cologne too if you want to save some time or take a break for a while. Overall, we had a fantastic time in Cologne - the atmosphere, quality and range of products on the stalls, as well as the fab food, meant it was a great Christmas trip! I would visit again and highly recommend it.
