Basel – The Christmas City at the heart of Europe
Basel, located in the three countries corner of Switzerland, France and Germany, is the centre of one of Europe’s most exciting Christmas regions. In November of each year, the cosmopolitan city on the Rhine surpasses itself in the scale and attractiveness of its preparations for the coming Advent period. Basel has a deep-rooted tradition as Switzerland’s most beautiful and largest Christmas city, and is well worth a visit every year. Particularly recommended is the Christmas market, which this year is being held not only on Barfüsserplatz, but also on Münsterplatz for the first time - one of the most beautiful squares in Basel. On both locations and in about 150 stands and wooden huts, traders and practitioners of art and crafts from all over Switzerland and the Basel region offer their goods and give a demonstration of their skills.
Not only the well-preserved Old Town is radiant in the warm Christmas light, but the shops and the facades of many buildings glitter with a golden glow. Roughly a hundred tall pine trees border the streets and stand like brightly lit sentinels pointing the way for the visitor. Seven reasons to visit Basel during Christmas time are as follows:
-
Illuminated Christmas streets with roughly a hundred tall pine trees
-
Great Christmas shopping possibilities
-
Top and specialised Christmas shops like the Johann Wanner Christmas House
-
Numerous Christmas concerts
-
Guided Christmas tours
-
Ideal starting point for a European Christmas adventure .

First visit to swiss markets, have previously been to other countries. Liked atmosphere in general in Switzerland - more emphasis on local crafts, less on food and drink though we did enjoy what was on offer. We stayed in Biel and used Swiss pass to travel extensively by train to lots of markets. (by the way, you don't list Biel and it also has a charming market with lots of local craftsmen/women demonstrating as well as selling.) Basel was lovely, plenty of variety and good value. Whole city had lots of other illuminations so atmosphere very festive.

When it comes to Basel I have to say that this city has everything going for it, the old city is a must see and has an abundance of excellent shopping and interesting old buildings dating back for many centuries, Basel also boasts what I can only refer to as the best Christmas market that I have ever visited, it is even better than those in Germany or Austria, the atmosphere is welcoming and inviting and the people are warm and friendly, you will leave Basel looking forward to the time when you can return.
I thoroughly recommend a visit to Basel, not only at Christmas for the markets but at any time of year, the city has so much to offer and if that isn't enough then the rest of Switzerland as well as Bavaria and southern Germany or the Alsace in France are all within easy reach and accessible on the excellent Swiss public transport system.

This is the first time I have visited a Christmas market and I wasn't disappointed. Basel is a lovely old town which comes alive at night. The atmosphere around the beautiful Christmas market was very festive with dozens of wooden cabins selling all manner of things and decorated with fairy lights. From traditional baubles and decorations to chocolates, cheeses, arts and crafts, knitwear etc there is something for everyone. A mug of warming Gluhwein is a must whilst browsing! My daughter and I stayed at the 5* Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, just a stones throw from the shops and market. It is an elegant place to stay with friendly, helpful staff and excellent service. We were collected from the airport in a chauffeur driven Bentley - a nice touch! The afternoon tea is delightful and I can thoroughly recommend their full-body massage. Rooms are luxurious with free mini-bar, Bang & Olufsen TV and a vast buffet breakfast included. The local trams run every few minutes and we used it to get to the zoo one day which was well worth the visit.

The Basel Christmas market is a wonderful experience and gives you a taste of the kind of Christmas that you read about in childhood story books.
The sights are magical- a host of festively decorated little wooden chalets, clustered in front of a pretty Swiss church. The chalets are crammed full with all sorts of traditional goodies- lots of decorations made by craftsmen in wood, glass, modelling clay etc. Gifts of a high quality -there was a fantastic range of hats that were, stylish, attractive and beautifully made and always crowded with ladies of every description trying them on. Traditional toys, foodstuffs and jewellery were some of the other items on sale. The air is filled with delicious arommas, the cinamon and spices from the mulled wine stalls and the yeasty, cheesy fragrance of the stalls baking flatbreads in wooden ovens. Carols and chiming bells are the predomminant sounds
and as darkness falls colourerd, twinkling lights make the atmosphere dazzling and intoxicating- an experience so memorable in so many ways that it lingers in your mind for a long time afterwards
