From the shores of Lake Geneva to the neighbouring mountain tops, Montreux Noël offers many activities centred around its traditional Christmas Market to please visitors of all ages. You can visit Santa, who comes directly from faraway Lapland to his house at the Rochers de Naye, discover an authentic Christmas Village in Caux, or stroll through a medieval market and attend a story festival within the walls of the legendary Château de Chillon. Year after year, the Christmas Market delights the some 400,000 visitors, who come from all over Switzerland and around the world, and reserves them a warm and friendly welcome in a festival of colours that create a magnificent atmosphere in the heart of the Montreux winter.

Montreuxs location is right by Lake Geneva with fabulous views right across and to the snow capped mountains on the other side.
It is so peaceful and relaxing; you could sit for hours just watching the world go by.
The christmas markets add to the setting with lots of wooden huts all lit up with fairy lights selling gifts and hot food and drink. We went in December 2008 and the markets were based around a particular theme which was nice but there wasn't many standard christmas gifts to buy. I think Montreux do a different theme every year so check what it is before you decide to go if you are mainly going to shop! After visiting Cologne's christmas markets the year before with its hunderds of stalls, we were a little disappointed at the size of the markets in Montreux as there were probably around 60 stalls, but the setting more than made up for that! A visit to see Father Christmas at Rochers-de-Naye is a must. It is high above Montreux, at 2045m above sea level, and only reachable by train. Make sure you have good footwear as it was over 6 feet deep in snow in some places! We also paid a visit to Château de Chillon which was really good.
Overall a visit to Montreux is definately worthwhile. Although the gifts on offer at the christmas markets were not overly great, the location, scenery and general atmosphere of Montreux is more than worth it.

First visit to swiss markets, have previously been to other countries. Liked atmosphere in general in Switzerland - more emphasis on local crafts, less on food and drink though we did enjoy what was on offer. We stayed in Biel and used Swiss pass to travel extensively by train to lots of markets. (by the way, you don't list Biel and it also has a charming market with lots of local craftsmen/women demonstrating as well as selling.) Montreux was lovely, had a distinctive French feel and there was so much to see and enjoy - even a visiting small Russian market. There were strolling entertainers which added to the festive atmosphere and the stalls had many goods we didn't see anywhere else. I treated myself to a chic French hat! This was probably our favourite of many lovely Swiss markets.
