Osnabrück - Typically Christmassy!!...14/03/2008

Osnabrück - Typically Christmassy!!
This year the historical Christmas Market in Osnabrück is opening its doors from 26th November to 22nd December and invites young and old to a cosy tour over the market place and in front of the cathedral, daily from 12noon until 9pm.

Having in the past been voted “Most beautiful Christmas Market in the North”, the Osnabrück Christmas Market was once again honoured in 2006. According to a study published by the newspaper, Die Welt am Sonntag, it gained an outstanding third place in the nationwide comparison of medium-sized Christmas Markets and is therefore once again regarded as the most beautiful Market in the North of Germany.

Visitors can savour this uniqueness once again this year. Guests can explore the stands and the Christmas delicacies with a mug of hot mulled wine and enjoy the special atmosphere. The 6m high fully functional nutcracker and the biggest musical box in the world, which turns out the tunes of 25 different Christmas songs, are both back this year. The biggest attraction for the little ones will be the advent calendar. St Nicholas in person will open one of its doors every day leading up to Christmas.

The unique atmosphere not only attracts the people of Osnabrück to the town centre, but visitors also come from the Netherlands to escape the pre-Christmas madness and to enjoy the historical Christmas Market.

On the second weekend in December there is also a silent Christmas Market in the Heger Tor quarter. Goods which were typical to the 'renaissance' period, such as wool and linen goods, colourful bowler hats, fur coats, birch-brooms and ceramic, wood and straw products, will be on offer in wooden huts lit by candle and lamp light.

On the four advent Saturdays visitors will, as usual, be able to browse the shops of the colourfully illuminated pedestrian zone for Christmas presents until 8pm. The “parcel buses” will once again be available on the Kamp-Promenade or the Nikolaiort. For more details click on the weblink.

The Romance of Christmas at Schönbrunn Palace

A nostalgic Christmas aura will hang over the courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace when the Christmas market opens this year for the 15th time. From 22 November to 26 December the Baroque palace will be under the spell of Christmas, the glittering lights creating an incomparable atmosphere and providing a magnificent setting for this romantic Advent village. The decorations on the Christmas tree provided by the Austrian Federal Forests will sparkle against the background of the palace itself, illuminated by spots.

60 exhibitors at this traditional and internationally renowned Christmas Market offer visitors the opportunity to purchase crafted Austrian artefacts in a seasonal atmosphere resonating with the scent of gingerbread and Christmas confectionery. Products range from Christmas tree decorations made of wood, felt, glass and stone, to handmade pottery, tin toys, clay products and hand-carved mangers. Visitors can also enjoy culinary specialities and wines from all over Austria as well as various interesting punches and tea specialities, including non-alcoholic and sugar-free beverages.
