Excellent makets in a wonderful setting!!! We visited Vienna from 3rd to the 6th December. The atmosphere was fabulous! Everywhere was lit with twinkling fairy lights and the smell of the warm food and drink could be smelt all around. There are a few markets scattered around Vienna with the market infront of the Rathaus being the largest. Over 200 stalls are packed with Christmas gifts, trinkets & hot food and drink. The market at Belvedere Palace is definitely worth a visit after dark when it is all lit up and the atmosphere is amazing. Other markets worth a visit are at Schönbrunn Palace and on Maria Theresien-Platz. While in Vienna, a visit to Schönbrunn Zoo and a ride on the ferris wheel are a must!!
I would rate the Vienna Rathaus Christmas Market as one of the best in the world. The food on offer is incredible - with even the most basic dishes tasting sublime - I don't know how they do it! The scenery is so beautiful - with all the (large) trees decorated with hearts and candy canes, etc - it looks amazing. Another nice touch is the windows to the Town Hall (Rathaus) - which are a giant advent calendar (that open up throughout December). And - sometimes overlooked - inside the Rathaus itself is a fantastic children's "workshop" - where children can make beautiful handmade gifts and food. I can't rate it highly enough - it really is so wonderful. (Also worth a visit in Vienna is the beautiful zoo and market at Schonbrunn).
We, as a family, have travelled to Vienna several times, usually the first week in December. We go for the atmosphere, especially around the markets. We also love the music, but more about that elsewhere! Our favourite market is the big one opposite the City hall. The glass of hot wine, the chocolate coated strawberries, the hot dogs and snitchels, all give it a festive feel and taste. The many stalls selling decorations, toys and other festive ware makes it another world. All in all, for several hours, if you wish, you can be a boy (or girl) again and forget there is anywhere else except this wonderland. We're back again in three weeks!
